UTILITARIAN. UNIFORM. UNISEX

At 1.61 we consider the post-industrial city as an atmospheric framework. The brooding countryside encroaching the city and the dark skies in which all is enveloped. The post-punk soundtrack audible through the quiet white-noise of wind and rain gave birth to much of the inspiration from which the uniforms of 1.61 are cut. This emotional framework suspends a rich utilitarian backdrop – once housing the industrial revolution. Its broken-down history later seeing a revolution of another kind as frayed song lyrics, submerged in guitar and stripped-down chord-progressions, emerged from this unsettling core. This is the core from which 1.61 draws.

1.61 is a unisex collection grounded in utilitarianism. Following a mindset that values the uniform —— easy, physically durable and considered —– 1.61 provides an alternative to the ubiquitous jean.

1.61 is the numeric representation of the golden ratio. The collection is focused on proportion and fit to achieve a timeless look that appears effortless and understated.

Using raw elements sourced in Japan, Italy and the U.S. 1.61 rigorously questions the boundaries of what can be achieved with material, wash, dye, treatment and fit - to create a new daily uniform.

Amid bird feces and corpses – our avian friends, having found their way through broken windows and doors to make their home and final resting place in this beautiful, old factory – our crack team of 6 brought Army of Freja to life.

The space was glorious and dark – full of sharp edges and long shadows, gorgeous old machinery and industrial history, exactly what we love.  We lugged a generator and a few vital pieces of equipment up four creaky, slippery flights of stairs. Generator whirring, we set up our minimal kit, lights, camera and music.

Joy Division’s Insight filled the space.

    Freja filled the space.

… and our first ever video love letter was born. It is grainy and dark and powerful and beautiful.

On the warmest day of the year, in this dark vent-less box, we created beauty and magic through our gratitude to music, love and industry.

Adding to the memories and excitement of the day, we also had a visit from the Fire Department. With unsolicited advice and help from a local man, we pulled the plugs and sat quietly in the dark, oppressive heat for an eternity. Pushed to the very edge of our limits, eternity miraculously ended and we cranked up again with our new, local friend acting as guard, in exchange for cigs.
